How to Run NextKast in the Cloud
Section 19: How to Run NextKast in the Cloud
Running NextKast in the cloud allows you to operate the software on a virtual server, providing reliable access, backup, and eliminating the need for local server maintenance. This method leverages a virtual private server (VPS) hosted on a server farm with backup power and solid internet connectivity.
Recommended Cloud Service Provider
We recommend DatabaseSmart for hosting NextKast on a virtual server using their Hyper-V hosting. The lowest cost option generally suffices due to NextKast’s low resource requirements. More storage may be needed based on the size of your music library.
- Sign Up for Hyper-V Hosting: Visit DatabaseSmart.com and choose a hosting plan.
- Receive Remote Desktop Credentials: After signing up, you will receive login credentials via email to access your virtual server.
Setting Up Remote Desktop Connection
- Use Remote Desktop (RDP): Search for “RDP” on your Windows, Mac, or mobile device to open the Remote Desktop app.
- Enter Credentials: Use the server name, username, and password provided by your VPS host to log in.
Installing and Configuring NextKast
- Install NextKast: Download and install NextKast on the virtual server just as you would on a local machine.
- Configure No Sound Card Mode: Go to “Broadcast Settings” and select “No Sound Card,” then restart NextKast.
- Manage Local Files: Set up local resource sharing to easily import music from your local computer to the server.
Cloud Audio Setup
When “Cloud Audio” is checked in Broadcast settings and “No Sound Card Mode” is enabled in NextKast, selecting the remote sound card when connecting via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) allows you to hear the audio while connected via RDP.
Additional Tips
- Backup and Restore: Regularly back up your NextKast settings and music files to avoid data loss in case of server issues.
- Access Flexibility: The cloud setup allows access from any device, including Mac, Android, or mobile, providing flexibility to manage your station remotely.
This setup frees your local machine from running NextKast and ensures it operates continuously in the cloud environment, offering greater reliability and flexibility for managing your radio automation needs.
